January 26, 2014

This past week has been extremely busy. Elder Cook and Elder Soares arrived on Friday the 17th. They began a series of missionary meetings, special stake conferences and training sessions in the countries belonging to the Area. They were shuttled to and from the other countries using the Huntsman jet. It pays to have friends in high places. One of the days while they were here in Guatemala , we attended an area employee devotional, a 3 mission devotional and a devotional at the MTC with the newly arrived missionaries. That evening there was a video conference with the Area 70's. It was a long day but very rewarding. Both of the visiting authorities brought their wives with them. They participated in some of the meetings. Elder and Sister Cook do not speak Spanish. They used an interpreter  every time they spoke. Elder and Sister Soares  are Portuguese speakers. E. Soares does fine in Spanish. Sister Soares gave her remarks in English and then had the interpreter convert her words into Spanish. They left to fly home today in the afternoon. They must be exhausted.
The couple that we are replacing went home Friday morning. They will be sorely missed. They were very efficient and organized. They will be returning back here as Mission Presidents in about 6 months. We feel that they will be outstanding.
This is our grandson, Jace, upon the cannon at the Fort San Felipe. He had a great trip.

After a steep climb up Temple 4 in Tikal, we all deserved a rest. The view from here was gorgeous.
Everything was breath-taking.
This photo is also at Tikal. Jace and Miles are exploring the ruins on the Main Plaza.
This is a cemetery in San Felipe de Lara. The cemetaries all over the country are like this. The custom of the country is to not embalm the dead. They are buried in a concrete tomb within 24 hours of death.
These two girls live in San Felipe de Lara. They helped us find our way back to our motel. They were intrigued with all of us Americans.
